Before that however, additional details for the build tomorrow and next Saturday: Encounter Studio is located at 555 De Haro St. Suite 120. It's around the back of the building on the ground floor. Look for the gryffons. Feel free to call me @ 720-936-5796, I'll be there at 11. Now on to how to get a suit.

1) Claim one here, first come first served. There are around 10 or so at Encounter. If you built one some previous year or are building this year and or left one here you get priority over newbies who haven't helped build. Newbies who show up morning of B2B and haven't helped get what's left. (Note - I bought enough material for 10 new suits this year so if you're new and want to run, come help build :-) - Matt)

OR

build your own:
Materials:
cheep light weight light grey outdoor wide carpet off the roll from home depot
HOT glue guns and HOT glue
Gutter Guards (the stiffer kind that are cut to 3 or 4 feet long or so) Holds the head up
Get a REALLY sharp pair of scissors or box cutter with FRESH blade
Green, black, and Red spray paint (with a gun nozzle)
tin foil and for the eyes
sharpies for the eyes and to draw the pattern on the carpet
optional:
-string & grommets to hold up end of tail and
-cardboard for stencils
-a pattern from me I'll make some and leave them in front of my place in a weber barbque call for directions 408 956-8643

-cut out
2 identical 7' tall fish shapes, (look at pictures of salmon or our pictures here and draw shape on carpet )
2 flippers and
one top fin
one spine protector reinforcer
2 hood pieces to keep head in place
2 flipper hand flaps to keep flippers moving with your arm

-to keep the head up not flopping over We use wire mesh gutter guards folded over and glued in from tip topmost point possible down past shoulders We use a long triangle of carpet wider than the gutter guard to hold it into the spine.

-figure out where to put arm holes then cut them out

glue gun it all together:
-the soft side of carpet goes inside (less itchy)
-glue in the spine first as high up the fish as possible
-glue the rest of the fish leaving the front open
-glue flippers so that they cover arm holes when you are wearing it, glue straps on fins to put your arm/wrist /hand through so the fin moves with your arms
-glue in 2 rectangular pieces inside the fish that hold your head in the right spot up/down and back/ front

Paint it with spray paint
cut stencils out of cardboard if you want sharp fin lines and gill lines
Look at pictures of salmon online for guidance.

poke holes in the front so you can tie it together in front with string
poke holes in tail in 4 places so you can use string to hold the tail up in back.
My understanding is that since we signed up a tad bit late we'll be assigned a spot when I check in tomorrow morning. As soon as I know something I'll post it here, on my Twitter (Mattywack), or you can call me when you get there @ 720.936.5796.

Things we still need:

Cardboard - for stencils and to cut the carpet on. And if we have too much we'll build a fort. We'll need at least one piece that's 7 feet long and about 3 feet wide for the main body stencil.

Box cutters - the heavy duty kind with lots of extra blades.

Heavy duty scissors

Crayons/markers

Newspaper - in case we decide to paint a costume or two

If you want to pick up spray paint it would be a huge help but most likely the painting will happen at the Encounter Studio. If you do decide to donate some paint we need lots of red and green. I picked up hunter green since it looks a little more realistic and a little bit of a darker red. Black and white also help but if I remember correctly we used about 3 or 4 cans of red and green to every can of black and white. Oh yeah, and those handy dandy little triggers for the paint so we don't kill our fingers.

I think that's all we need at this point. Contact me if you have any questions.

A drunk salmon wandering around SF nowhere near the race must have been hysterical. Especially since he was all all banged up when I got home.
cheep light weight light grey outdoor wide carpet off the roll from home depot
HOT glue guns and HOT glue
Gutter Guards (the stiffer kind that are cut to 3 or 4 feet long or so) Holds the head up
Green, black, and Red spray paint (with a gun nozzle)
tin foil and for the eyes
sharpies for the eyes and to draw the pattern on the carpet

A google search for "horny salmon" pulls up the following:

"Every cave one visits is similar. In these works of art, some of which date back as far as 30,000 years or older and none of which are newer than 15,000 years old, every animal is rendered in voluptuous proportions: massive curvaceous haunches that bulge out with the natural contours of the cave wall. The use of the line is nothing short of sensuous.[...]"

**Here's the important part***

"[...]In the Abri Poisson, a small chamber set into the base of a rocky overhang in which a prehistoric stone-carver chiseled out a fish, the salmon that has been etched onto the chamber ceiling bears the sign of a horny salmon swimming upstream to the spawning grounds: a bulbous swelling at the front of the snout that acts as a navigatory clitoris, giving pleasure to the salmon as it is buffeted by the current of water against which it struggles."

So what we are doing here is upholding a 30,000 year old tradition. Be proud, salmon runners.

P.S. I will give a hug to anyone who includes a bulbous navigatory clitoris on the snout of their salmon.
